RAM disk is a virtual disk or block of computer memory that uses the same hardware resources as physical RAM, expanding the available hard drive space. A ramdisk is typically used for caching during very brief activities, but it can also be used to load commonly-used files into memory for faster access. The size of a ramdisk can vary depending on factors such as the amount of RAM installed in your system, but it's most common to use an 8GB ramdisk on 64GB systems and 20GB on 256GB systems. This article outlines how to create a ramdisk with Windows 10/8/7/Vista or Linux operating systems.
To create a ramdisk on Windows 10/8/7 or Vista, follow these steps: In this step, you will need to insert your Windows 7 or 8 installation disc into your PC. In the next screen, click "Repair your computer." After that, follow the screens to get to Command Prompt. You can use the keyboard shortcut "Ctrl + Shift + Esc" to open Task Manager and select the option of "Start a command prompt". Once there, type in diskpart and hit Enter. Type list disk and press enter. For this purpose, we will use the example given in the image below:
Next, type select disk n (where n is your hard drive number). Then type clean. Followed by create partition primary. Then format FS=NTFS quick. After that is completed, exit diskpart and type exit in Command Prompt to return to Windows. Now, right-click anywhere on your desktop and select New > Shortcut. This takes you to the Create Shortcut dialogue box where you can name your shortcut (the default is called "Create RAMDisk"). Type in the location of the file as C:\\windows\\system32\\rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,processidleactivator create ramdiskfilename n ramdisksize in megabytes (e.g., C:\\windows\\system32\\rundll32.exe advapi32. dll, processidleactivator create ramdisk "C:UsersRamdisk20 ramdisksize in megabytes"). Finally, click Next and then Finish. This creates a shortcut with the name "Create RAMDisk" on your desktop. Double-click on the shortcut to run it and create your ramdisk.
To create a Linux-based ramdisk using GRUB add the following command (if using GRUB Legacy add this line to /boot/grub/menu. lst): This creates the partition which will be used as a ramdisk. For example, to use /dev/sdb1 : GRUB must have access to your Linux root file system either directly or using a loopback module. This command space-installs GRUB into the first sector of the hard drive, then places a compressed image of the second sector (containing the ramdisk) into your RAM disk. After issuing this command, wait about ten seconds and it should automatically load grub.cfg from your hard drive into memory and present you with a menu of choices.
